Advancing gastrointestinal nutrition through research

Alongside my clinical work as a Specialist Gastrointestinal Dietitian, I am passionate about improving care for people living with gastrointestinal conditions through research and education.

As an NIHR Associate Principal Investigator (Associate PI) working with Laparoscopic Surgeon Mr Alfredo Tonsi, I am actively involved in the OCEaN (Optimisation before Crohn's Surgery using Exclusive Enteral Nutrition) trial, a national multicentre study led by the University of Birmingham. The trial is investigating whether six weeks of Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) before surgery can improve recovery and reduce post-operative complications in adults with Crohn's disease. The study forms part of a wider programme of research to optimise nutritional care before surgery and improve long-term outcomes for patients with Crohn's disease.

Being involved in research allows me to remain closely connected to emerging evidence and translate the latest findings into practical, personalised dietary advice for my patients.
